Not content with having one oft-injured pitcher, the Indians went out and got themselves the mother of all oft-injured pitchers.
Via ESPN:
The Cleveland Indians signed free-agent pitcher Carl Pavano to a one-year contract Tuesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Pavano, 32, is looking to rehabilitate his career after suffering numerous injuries in four seasons with the Yankees. He posted a 9-8 record in 26 starts after signing a four-year, $39.95 million contract with New York in December 2004.
It's believed that Pavano is looking for a contract with a low base salary and incentives based upon his workload. The deal could be similar to Mike Hampton's recent contract with the Houston Astros, which will pay Hampton a guaranteed $2 million and an additional $2 million in potential bonuses.
Look out AL Central (and Cleveland area hospitals), Carl's in town! Of course, now that he's not on the Yankees and pitching for pennies, here comes a sterling 15 win season.
Fuck. me.

If he wins 15 games, I will eat my own shoe.
Being a huge Tribe fan (and sadly a Cubs fan in the NL) I nearly threw up in my mouth when we signed Kerry Wood. He's one step above JoBlow, and terrifying in any room that has paper laying around as a single paper cut may force him to receive Tommy John surgery. But Pavano? PAVANO?! Not only did I throw up, I now have explosive diarrhea. The Pavano Curse begins.
See, I think the difference here is that the Indians are paying him TWO million. You know, instead of FORTY million.
So if he doesn't work out, well, who cares? It's not like they paid him forty million dollars or anything.
chemo hit it dead on.
an incentive laden deal that only gaurentees $1.5 mill is pennies on the dollar in mlb. besides the indians have a derth of young pitching that will push pavano out of the rotation if he doesnt preform.
and speaking of curses, the the curse of a-rod remains in full effect in the big apple. no soup for you!
if he wins 15 i'll eat my own head.
@ Mez
When you guys signed Kerry Wood the first thing I thought of was Borowski part 2. Wood is infinitely more talented though so who knows.
@ Chemo
The incentive scheme in his deal is crazy.
5+ million in incentives for a base salary of nearly 2 million. Either Shapiro is just being a dick to Carl and taunting his injury history (I support totally that)or he genuinely believes Carl can make a difference on his team.
Bigger risks...
Kerry Wood (career 118 ERA+) and Carl Pavano for 24 million/2 years
or
CC Sabathia (7.92 postseason ERA) and AJ Burnett (headcase while pitching in front of enormous crowds in CANADA) for 240 million/12 years
And can we please stop comparing Wood (when healthy, one of the league's most dominant strikeout pitchers) to JoeBo (he's...gutsy!)?!?!
The "when healthy" thing is a pretty substantial caveat in this case. I wasn't comparing them talent wise, in fact I clearly said Wood is infinitely more talented. I was only looking at them in terms of injury history. Hence the similarities with Borowski.
Good points about CC and AJ. I'm still willing to give CC the benefit of small sample size but AJ is definitely one giant fuckhead, no two ways about it.
